CLUB HISTORY
The History of Findern Football Club (20/08/09)

Findern Football Club was founded in January of 1966. Following a series of friendly matches the club entered the Derby Sunday Football League for the 1966/67 season.

Only one of the original founder members - Secretary Dave Beighton - is still an active member of the club. Other long serving members include Chairman Michael Atkins and Treasurer Roger Beighton.

Progress was steadily made with the club joining the Derby City League and a Reserve Team was formed and then the club introduced both Junior and Youth Teams. We also had short periods of membership in the South Derbyshire Sunday League, the Derby Taverners Sunday League, the Burton Junior League, and the Burton Sunday League.

In 1983, Findern Football Club introduced a Saturday Team in the Derby Senior Football League (now known as the East Midlands Senior League). This was followed in1995 with the club taking over The Wheel Inn FC, a Findern based Sunday morning team in the Buirton Sunday League.

By 1996, both our Junior and Youth teams had finished and the club decided to eventually concentrate only on Saturday football by withdrawing the Sundays teams and concentrating only on Saturday Senior Football.

During those years several managers had led the varios teams for short periods, such as Tommy Holt, Keith Warner, Mick Betts and Dave Nelson, but for over 30 years Dave and Roger Beighton had filled the Team Managers positions. In 2002 Paul Massey - a former player - accepted the position of Team Manager. He proposed a plan of ambition which would move the club forward to a higher level of local football. This was achieved when the club joined the Midlands Regional Alliance for the 2003/04 season. Paul then led the team to winning the MRA Junior Cup and also the Derbyshire FA Junior Cup South after just 2 seasons. The club kept it's interest in the East Midlands Senior League by entering a Reserve Team (called Findern Sports).

In 2006 Steve Ford was appointed Team Manager, with a mission to continue improving the team. This was acheived in the 2008/09 season by again winning the Derbyshire FA Junior Cup South and also finishing Runners Up in Division 2, thereby gaining promotion to Div 1 of the MRA. This enabled our Reserve Team to move into the MRA Div 2.

In 1976, the club introduced the Findern FC Travel Club. Annual holidays to Winter hotspots around the Mediteranean were arranged every year and evenually finished in 1997. These holidays started with players and some parents and included friendly matches overseas. Over the years, the popularity of the holidays saw many people outside the football club join the trips, and this created extra funds for the club.

In 1985, the club played in a tournament in the South of France organised by the the international organisation Eurosportring. The 10 day footballing holiday also took in the Monaco Gran Prix during the stay.

In 1973, Findern Football Club were one of the first clubs in the county to seek approval for Shirt Advertising when the international Road Hauliers F B Atkins & Sons Ltd sponsored the club. Several years later, and we again were first when the FA agreed on clubs having more than one sponsor, when Lonsdale Travel agreed a shirt sponsorship deal with our Saturday Team.
Other prominent businesses have included National Power who sponsored our Junior Team for several years in the 1980's

Would moving kids' football to a summer game help improve the development of young footballers?
Yes - better pitches mean a better chance to develop technique/skills
No - wouldn't make any real difference to development
Maybe - but I'd be worried about more injuries on firm pitches
